Srikanth Kondapalli, Professor of Chinese studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, on Thursday received the K Subrahmanyam award for 2010.
The award was handed over by Defence Minister A K Antony, who said, “I take this opportunity to heartily congratulate Dr Srikanth Kondapalli for winning this year’s K Subrahmanyam Award. This is the fourth award in the series and its conferment recognises Dr Kondapalli’s outstanding work on China, especially its armed forces. We attach great importance to our relations with China. I hope that this award will provide impetus to other researchers to go in for more intensive research work on China.”
Dr. Kondapalli, currently Professor, Centre for East Asian Studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, has published extensively on the Chinese security and military dynamics and structures for nearly 15 years. Among his publications include two books – China’s Military: The PLA in Transition (1999) and China’s Naval Power (2001); Monographs and Working Papers – People’s Liberation Army: Evolving Dynamics (1996), A Great Leap Forward Modernisation: Chinese Armed Forces in 2003 (2005), From Tactical to Strategic Mobility: Aspects of China’s Military Logistics (2005); and chapters in books and research articles – “Cohesion and Discipline among the Officer Corps of China’s Army” (Strategic Analysis, 1996), “China’s Naval Strategy” (Strategic Analysis, 2000), “Transparency with Chinese Characteristics: China’s White Paper on National Defence of 2004” (RUSI Journal, 2005).
Dr. Kondapalli has wide-ranging experience in research and teaching in institutions in India, Taiwan, and China, is proficient in the Chinese language, and has actively contributed to the debate and knowledge on issues relating to the Chinese military through his publications, lectures, and media outreach.
