SHRI MANICKA TAGORE:

Will the Minister of EXTERNAL AFFAIRS be pleased to state:

(a) whether the Government of India has received any proposal/plan from Sri Lankan Government/representatives regarding construction of houses for Sri Lankan Tamilians who are in the rehabilitation camp both in India/Sri Lanka;
(b) if so, the details thereof; and
(c) the steps taken by the Government on those proposals/plans?

ANSWER THE MINISTER OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS (SHRI S.M. KRISHNA)

(a) to (c) India has announced substantial assistance for the rehabilitation and resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Northern & Eastern Sri Lanka. In this regard, during the visit of Sri Lankan President to India in June 2010, India also announced a major initiative to undertake a programme to construct 50,000 houses for the IDPs in Northern and Eastern Provinces of Sri Lanka. The Government of Sri Lanka has welcomed the offer of Indian support.
