Director General, IDSA, Dr Arvind Gupta’s article on India-China’s recent standoff in Ladakh, titled, ‘Lessons from Ladakh standoff’ was published in The new Indian Express on May 10, 2013.
The resolution of the Sino-Indian standoff in the Depsang plains area of Ladakh has for the time being lowered the tensions in the bilateral relations between the neighbours. The withdrawal of the Chinese troops from a point 19km inside the Indian territory in return for a removal of just a tin shed in Chumar area seems to be the crux of the agreement reached by the two sides. As a result of the resolution of the latest face-off, the high-profile visits of the Indian external affairs minister to China and that of the Chinese premier to India have been saved.
