Dr. Meena Singh Roy is a Research Fellow and heads the West Asia Centre at the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA). Her areas of specialisation are Central Asia and West Asia. Prior to joining IDSA, she was a senior research scholar in the Department of African Studies, Delhi University. She was associated with the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, School of Oriental and African Studies and London School of Economics for her research work. In 2014, she was a visiting Research Fellow with the German Institute of Global and Area Studies’ (GIGA) Institute of Asian Studies.
Dr. Roy has published several peer-reviewed articles and papers focused on West Asia and Central Asia. She has also been involved in net assessment reports and strategic gaming on West Asia and Central Asia. She has published a monograph titled The Shanghai Cooperation Organization: India Seeking New Role in the Eurasian Regional Mechanism (2014), edited books titled International and Regional Security Dynamics: Indian and Iranian Perspectives (July 2009) and Emerging Trends in West Asia: Regional and Global Implications (2014), and completed the joint Delhi Policy Group-IDSA Task Force report on West Asia in Transition in 2015.

The article argues that under the given circumstances, there is no option for India but to take the more active diplomatic initiative to de-escalate the crisis in the Persian Gulf region.

Understanding implications of Turkey’s assault on Syria

Research Fellow, IDSA, Dr. Meena Singh Roy’s article on Turkey’s military offensive ‘Operation Peace Spring’ in Syria, titled ‘Understanding implications of Turkey’s assault on Syria’ has been published in Deccan Herald on October 15, 2019.

Turkey aims to create a safe zone inside Syria for the resettlement of about 2 million of 3.6 million Syrian refugees currently in the country, writes Dr. Roy.

India’s Iran Dilemma

Research Fellow, IDSA, Dr Meena Singh Roy’s article on India-Iran relations, titled ‘India’s Iran Dilemma’ has been published in the Economic Times on April 29, 2019.

Given the current volatile situation in Yemen and Libya combined with major uncertainty in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan it is extremely important to engage Iran to find long-term solutions to the regional problems through smart, balanced diplomacy and dialogue, writes Dr Roy.

Research Fellow, IDSA, Dr Meena Singh Roy’s article on West Asia, titled ‘India and West Asia a Realistic Approach of Engagement’ was published in the January 2018 issue of ‘The Diplomatist’.

The article deals with the difficult choices before India, given the existing regional complexities and rising expectations from West Asia. It analyses how New Delhi has been able to manage closer relations with Israel, Saudi Arabia and other GCC countries, while maintaining its ties with Iran.
