Will the Minister of EXTERNAL AFFAIRS be pleased to state:-

(a) whether the Government is aware of the rising influence of China over Sri Lanka, Maldives, Pakistan and Nepal;

(b) if so, the details of Chinese activities in these countries, country-wise;

(c) whether these activities pose any danger to our national interests and if so, the details thereof;

(d) whether Chinese activities in the neighbouring countries are also causing strategic imbalance in South East Asia and if so, the details thereof; and

(e) the steps taken/being taken by the Government in this regard?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) TO (e) OF LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 132 REGARDING `CHINESE INFLUENCE IN INDIAN NEIGHBOURHOOD` FOR ANSWER ON 06.03.2013

(a) to (e) Government is aware of China’s enhanced economic and technological capabilities in execution of infrastructure projects in developing countries. Chinese involvement in projects such as power plants, ports, roads and railways in Sri Lanka, Maldives, Pakistan and Nepal, is known. Government accords highest priority to India’s relations with neighbouring countries. India is an active development partner of its neighbours and is involved in various projects in these countries. Government keeps a constant watch on all developments having a bearing on India’s security and takes all necessary measures to safeguard it.
